Starting The End - Visual Pitch

Starting The End: Visuals

'"IS YOUR LIFE COMPLETE?" IS A STUPID QUESTION'

“IF BEING ELDERLY BEGINS TO UNSEAT MY REASON AND PULL IT PIECEMEAL, IF IT LEAVES ME NOT LIFE BUT MERE ANIMATION, I SHALL BE OUT OF MY CRUMBLING, TUMBLE-DOWN TENEMENT AT A BOUND.”- SENECA

“I FUCKING HATE GETTING OLD!”- OUR MUM

Based on a true story: two women both at very different stages of getting older stare down the barrel of death and in doing so take another look at life.

Although the story is inherently intimate, the themes are epic and this will constantly be reflected in the shooting style.

Shot with a calm eye the camera will be a mature watching witness.

Close-ups are close. Wides are wide. Movement when the story moves.

Intimate detail. Forensic in its eye on shifts in emotions and the details of change.

Comedy can be enhanced with framing. The size of a character within the frame, what is around them, behind them, in front, in the timing of cuts, in the silences left around the dialogue.

This is a world we recognise, the world as we see it. Light is natural. Design realistic, a short hand into character.

This is a story of paths and journeys, some opening up to us, some closing down. Roads ahead and having to make serious decisions about which one we will take.

Locations reflect story. A car is a vehicle for us to travel to another point in our life. A beautiful home filling up with medical equipment crudely pushing its occupant out of the life they wanted to live. One home stark with a desire for order whilst another is rich and messy with a life being lived in a more unique style. Hospital, a place where your individuality is irrelevant. College, a place constantly demanding we pay attention. And nature making us all suddenly just small.

Water is not just a location it's a feeling. To sink or swim, or to simply let the water close over our heads and carry us away.

College - a place where young minds challenge older ones. Are we expanding or contracting? Growing or shrinking? Who is teaching who? Who is the more powerful within this dynamic -teacher or student?

Faces are totally natural. Nothing covered up or neatened.

In scenes of dialogue we will be as much focused on the reactions of those not speaking as those who are. Huge things are being asked of these characters. They are faced with life changing decisions. We will take our time to watch them taking these in. We will watch their thoughts closely. These scenes give us time to be in the decision with the characters.

The sound mix will also reflect and echo our themes, rich, hinting at and reminding us of worlds beyond the scenes we are in, worlds the characters may now be having to decide to leave behind.

This is a story of the personal and the epic designed for cinema.
